08/2022: Kurzstudie zur Rolle von Biogas für ein klimaneutrales, 100 % erneuerbares Stromsystem 2035
Laut G7-Beschluss soll der deutsche Strommarkt bis 2035 vollständig dekarbonisiert werden. Ein wesentlicher Baustein dafür soll die Entfesselung kostengünstiger, jedoch fluktuierender EE-Erzeugung durch Wind und PV bilden (Aufwuchs von heute 45% bis 80% 2030). Gleichzeitig besteht politischer Konsens, dass für eine Vollversorgung mit erneuerbarem Strom, regelbare Back-up-Optionen, die bedarfsgerecht Strom produzieren können, benötigt werden.
Vor dem russischen Angriffskrieg und der sich zuspitzenden Energiekrise galt der Zubau von Gaskraftwerken (H2Ready) als favorisierte Lösung als flexible Erzeugungstechnologie zur Deckung der Residuallast in einem erneuerbar geprägten Stromsystem. Vor dem Hintergrund eines verstärkten politischen Bestrebens nach Unabhängigkeit von russischen Erdgasimporten, müssen alternative flexible Erzeugungsoptionen mobilisiert werden, um mittel-und langfristig eine sichere Stromversorgung zu gewährleisten und gleichzeitig die klimapolitischen Zielsetzungen zu erreichen.
Dabei blendet der Gesetzgeber bislang die Flexibilisierung des bestehenden Biogasanlagenparks größtenteils aus, obwohl sich diese Potenziale möglicherweise kurzfristig und regional erschließen lassen. Die beiliegende Studie untersucht, welchen Beitrag Biogas und Biomethan für ein sicheres, klimaneutrales und kosteneffizientes Stromsystem leisten kann. Das haben wir mit der Energy2market GmbH vom Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH und dem DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH untersuchen lassen. Zudem geht die Studie der Frage nach, wie hoch das Substitutionspotenzial von Erdgas durch Biogas ist und wie das Erzeugungsprofil und Flexibilitätsanforderungen des künftigen Biogasanlagenparks im Stromsystem beschaffen sein muss.
